Back in mid 2008, I used this blog to track the development of a short collage animation called Around The World, the final studio project for my Bachelor of Communications/Multimedia Systems.
For the past two years, I have been uploading illustration to the Ilexart photostream on Flikr. My day job has been in media relations but I have continued to write, paint and design in my spare time. This has included a few commissions, such as the map of Canberra attached, as well as providing graphic design support for a wonderful Cambodian NGO called Khmer Creations.
Khmer Creations partner with inspiring social enterprises that are empowering Khmer women to learn traditional and modern artisan skills. By linking these groups to international retailers, Khmer Creations is assisting their enterprises to become viable and profitable entities.
This social enterprise has created employment for eight young women that have been trafficked or who, due to a lack of alternative opportunities, may be at risk of entering the sex industry. The Khmer Creations jewellery production group is now managed and owned by its Cambodian members and is financially self-sufficient with plans to grow. Group members earn a fair and stable wage, have the option of taking no interest loans from the business and utilise savings schemes, health care benefits, English language classes and leadership courses.
I highly recommend you check out their jewellery, designed by my talented friend Jane Darbyshire. The 2010 Catalogue was produced by Nhong Rady and myself.
From March 2011, I will be travelling overland from Cairo to Cologne, through the Middle East, the Balkans and Eastern Europe, and will then spend a month in the Scottish highlands and Ireland. I will be sketching and posting along the way.
