In keeping with Nellie’s journalistic profession descriptive words and captions cut from newspaper print will appear as necessary. The dialogue style is inspired by the “Without Sense or Reason” illustration from the children’s storybook The Red Tree, by Shaun Tan. I met Shaun Tan a few years ago when I was studying Illustration at Chisholm Institute – he is an extremely talented and obsessed man and I am in awe of him! His other books include The Rabbits, The Lost Thing and the graphic novel The Arrival. In his words: “They are best described as ‘picture books for older readers’ rather than young children, as they deal with relatively complex visual styles and themes, including colonial imperialism, social apathy, the nature of memory and depression”.
My collage pieces will involve minimal use of white so that the newspaper print, on a white back plate, stands out from the moving elements. The dialogue will be timed to suit the mood of the current sequence. For example, text will flash past during the crash sequence but will crawl across the screen during the lazy balloon flight.
